Zinc and Iron for ADHD symptoms in Children

Monday Study Rundown September 2nd

I’m excited to continue our “Monday Study Rundown” series with a study that delves into the role of zinc and iron in managing ADHD symptoms in children. This research highlights how these minerals can influence behavior and cognitive function.

Key Highlights:

  1. Participants: 50 children diagnosed with ADHD, classified into three groups based on their zinc and ferritin (iron) levels.
  2. Results:
    • Group I (Zinc-deficient): Significant improvement in attention, hyperactivity, emotional lability, and impulsivity with zinc supplementation. No significant changes in IQ scores or other ADHD-related problems.
    • Group II (Zinc and Iron-deficient): Significant improvement in verbal IQ, total IQ, and ADHD symptoms, including hyperactivity and impulsivity, with combined zinc and iron supplementation.
    • Group III (Non-deficient): No supplementation was given, serving as a control group.
  3. Conclusion: Zinc supplementation alone can improve certain ADHD symptoms, but combining zinc and iron proves to be more effective in enhancing both behavioral symptoms and cognitive performance.

This study underscores the potential of targeted mineral supplementation in managing ADHD symptoms, offering a valuable approach alongside conventional treatments.
